This will support my lifetime goal of becoming an Elementary School Educator. Although I have not complete this yet, I will be graduating in 2024. The program to this point has allowed me to gain knowledge and skills that are crucial to the role as an educator. I have learned a lot about myself on this journey.
Human Services Diploma
I developed interpersonal skills with clients. Working with challenges and struggles in others while allowing individual opportunities to reflect on my own practice. Here I learned the importance such as support systems of clients including home, work, school and family life, I have developed an understanding of interconnectedness.
Positive Discipline Workshop
This workshop has provided me with the insight into appropriately working with children. I have gained effective strategies through this workshop, allowing me to capability to develop positive relationships with children and their families.
Early Childhood Educator Certificate
Supporting my many years of experience working with children children age infant to 12 years old. I gained understanding of daily routine, while building on skills such as conflict resolution, development of relationships, and social-emotional development. This experience will prove to be valuable as I become an educator.
Bachelor of Arts and Human Services Diploma
HUMS 1770, I learned about residential schools, struggles, and support for Indigenous Communities.
Math 1900, I learned about all the different ways math can be taught to students. This allowed me to escape the fixed mindset of having only one way to solve a problem.
HIST 1120 educated me on the pre-confederation era in Canada.
HIST 1220 educated me on the post-confederation in Canada.
SOCI 2160 gave me insight into the differences between households and the family unit.
GEOG 2220 I learned about people and different geographical maps across Canada.
HIST 3120 we learned about the Cold War era in Canada, focusing on fears, civil rights movements, and injustices. ENGL 3160 I found to be an extremely interesting course. This looked at podcasts, websites, videos, and written works by Indigenous authors.
Bachelor of Education
EDEF 3100 gives perspective into the history of Education as it develops over time in Canada.
EDIE 3200 looks at child development and teaching and learning styles.
EDPE 3100 gave me practical experience conducting a physical education lesson plan.
EDSC 3100 gave an an opportunity to conduct and explore through science, looking at students' natural inquiry processes.
EDMA 3200 gave a new outlook on mathematics with open ended questions, groupwork, number talks and and overview of a variety of mathematical concepts.
EDSO 3200 gave an Indigenously inspired glance at social studies. We explored place based learning and utilizing Indigenous views within the curriculum.
Childcare Conferences
My favourite topics include outdoor school, the blanket exercise and conflict resolution. The outdoor school seminar shows students learning using the natural environment around them. The blanket exercise is a unique way of Indigenous storytelling. This gives the listeners a impactful message and experience. Conflict resolution is a valuable tool that can be used with students, their parents and your coworkers.
SD 73 Aboriginal Lead Sesson with Jo Chrona
This experience provided valuable information and perspectives of Indigenous knowledge. This session required the participants to look at and reflect on their place and role in the anti-racism journey. There were many valuable Indigenous resources shared during this event as well. Jo Chrona discussed her own book as well "Wayi Wah" with us the value and uses of it.
New Teachers Conference (Nelson)
I gained valuable knowledge as I become a new teacher. The seminars that I attended: New Teachers Learning about BCTF and Your Local, Collaboration with the Teacher-Librarian in Inquiry and Research and 215 Le Estcwicwey Honouring The Children Buried at Kamloops Indian Residential School.
